27: A Mission to Overcome Yours | Garrett Brumfield | Overcome Yours

Be Inspired | Do Good:

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain

Those are Garrett Brummfield’s words to live by. Born with Cerebral Palsy, he’s the leader of Overcome Yours, a movement designed to inspire, empower and encourage people toward overcoming obstacles and living life more fully.

“For me, I feel like my purpose is to share a story,” Brumfield explains. “This doesn’t have to be the only thing that I do. I do want to make this (Overcome Yours), obviously, a full time endeavor. For me, I feel like my purpose for being born with a disability is to be able to share and empower others, because some folks with disabilities aren’t as fortunate as I am to be able to get out and do and drive and just enjoy life so much. But I feel you can enjoy life at any stage of the game.”

Besides his website, Facebook page, Instagram account and media appearances, Brumfield is spreading the word about seizing abilities to people on the street and through a variety of public speaking engagements. His message of tolerance, hope and inspiration works for audiences from elementary school to the elderly.

Go for it!  Get involved.  Help this local leader create a national, and while we are at it, a worldwide movement.


Before we talk about Overcome Yours, let’s first talk about the word “overcome.” We’ve all heard this word countless times before. It’s a word rooted in great strength and power. Many people associate the word with an obstacle, and to overcome said obstacle is a great accomplishment, but what about those of us who struggle to do so. If you are one of those people, have no fear you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too.

Having been born with Cerebral Palsy, I know all too well what it means to be challenged by life’s obstacles, but I also know what it feels like to push past those obstacles to achieve great success. My life has been somewhat of a roller coaster. I’ve had times when I’ve been on top of the world where I thought nothing could go wrong, and I’ve had times when I’ve felt alone like no one understood what I was going through. The truth is, I wasn’t alone, and neither are you. We all experience highs and lows. That’s part of life. Given my experiences, I knew in my heart that I needed to create a platform to showcase those highs and lows, not only in my life, but in the lives of others as well, so that those who are struggling may find hope in knowing that they’re not alone. After much planning and preparation, that platform became what is now known as Overcome Yours.

Overcome Yours is not just another brand of feel-good motivation…it’s a movement. It’s a call to action. It’s a way of life. It’s motivation that’s raw, real, and a bit edgy. Some of what you’ll hear, read, and see might make you laugh, it might make you cry, but most importantly, I hope it challenges you. I hope it challenges you to look within yourself and not only overcome your obstacles, but break the chains that bind you from getting the most out of life. Overcome Yours is about spreading hope, change, and awareness so that lives may be changed.

I believe everyone has a “disability.” It may not be a physical one. It may be one that only they notice, but everyone has something that is holding them back or “disabling” them from reaching their full potential. It is my mission to not only share my story, but the stories of others as well, through speaking engagements and social media to help the “disabled” become enabled to conquer whatever obstacles stand in their way.


I’ve found that with a little soul searching, and the right attitude, anything is possible. Whether your obstacles are big or small, permanent or temporary, I believe you have the power to overcome it. The steps may be small, and the journey may be long, but I guarantee it’ll be worth it.
